I am a multimedia communications specialist for Alabama Power in Birmingham, Alabama. I’ve worked as a journalist and meteorologist at TV and radio stations around central Alabama for more than 25 years. I’ve also consulted for a number of churches, organizations and businesses, providing them with advice on social media evangelism and audio/video equipment upgrades. (read more about me here.)
I created Outreach Planner after developing a successful marketing strategy for Deerfoot Church of Christ, my home congregation. Our targeted, non-traditional outreach plan in 2018 planted our name and the Good News of Jesus more than 500,000 times in the zip codes around our congregation.
How Content Marketing Works
The success of Outreach Planner hinges on a concept called Content Marketing. Instead of delivering traditional advertisements telling people who you are, where you’re located and when you worship, content created through the vision of Outreach Planner starts with WHY: why someone should visit your congregation, why someone should listen to your sermon, why someone should read the Bible, etc.
When you focus your marketing on WHY, the who, what, when, where and how take care of themselves.
So what does a typical Outreach Planner workshop look like? The workshop is designed to last about five hours with a break for lunch and a few other physical / mental / social breaks:
Session 1: Start With Why – Overview of the Marketing Mission
> Why + How = What
> your target audience is on social media but may not respond to traditional outreach methods like door knocking
Session 2: Define Success
> Who – determine your target audience(s)
> What – what we want them to do
Session 3: Content Creation
> How to find the best 60 seconds in your sermon
> How to write promotional materials to actually get someone to learn more / visit
Session 4: Social Media Advertising
> How to setup an ad campaign on your Facebook page and Instagram account
Session 5: Let’s Practice! + Q&A
When we’re done, you and your team will leave with a custom action plan knowing who you’re trying to reach, how to reach them and the best way to encourage them to learn more about Jesus and your congregation.
Who is Outreach Planner for?
Outreach Planner is for ministers, elders, deacons and anyone else in your congregation who is part of your congregation’s online evangelism efforts, such as website administrators and social media editors. It can be held on a Saturday or on Sunday between morning and evening worship services. The total run-time of the seminar is about 5 hours.
